At this point in the play i am truly impressed by Claudius’ acting skills. If it werent for the ghost of Hamlet’s father i would have never suspected him as the murderer. He seems compassionate for both his wife and Laertes in an extremely natural way. ” She’s so conjunctive to my life and soul/ That, as the star moves not but in his sphere , I could not but by her.” He tolerates Hamlet because of the love he has for his wife. Where Hamlet thinks Claudius killed his father solely for power… maybe there was more to it. Also When Laertes finds out his father died, Claudius soothes him admitting to be equally sad about the events. He even tries to relate to Laertes in a fatherly manner by offering him advice to ” Break not our sleeps for that. You must not think/ That we are made of stuff so flat and dull. That we can let our beard be shook by danger,. And think it pastime. You shortly shall hear more./ I loved your father, and we love ourself;”In doing this he is winning Laertes over and sorta showing that he is human. By showing this it makes Halmet look psychotic .
